Superfoods


Superfoods are unique and often exotic food sources that provide unusually high levels of one of more of the body’s essential nutrients. Usually, people associate superfoods with high levels of antioxidants. While most products considered “superfoods” do have the enhanced benefits of high levels of antioxidants, some are something else.

The most well known superfoods are exotic fruits such as the South American palm fruit acai berry which are high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients. Since the term “acai” become a household name in the middle of 2008 when it was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and subsequently received many celebrity endorsements, a lot of marketing has gone into promoting other types of exotic berry superfoods.

While the attention given to acai, goji, and other berries is well deserved, other foods that are not berries also have exceptionally high nutritional content and natural health benefits. Below are the superfoods that I either have tried for a time or am using currently. Organic Coconut Oil

It’s important to remember that at this time media attention has pretty much been confined to the “berry” superfoods. The result is front page coverage of the acai berry, goji berry, and black currants as well as a renewed interest in blueberries and pomegranate juice. All of these superfoods supply a host of nutrients, are high in antioxidants, and are one of the keys to anti-aging methods being researched today but it is also important to realize that the foods that contain the HIGHEST concentrations of antioxidants actually come from spices and essential oils derived from spices, not from exotic fruits, nuts, or berries.

Unfortunately, the media has created a “berry fixation” that borders on mania. A lot of false information is floating around concerning the supposed “miracle” abilities of various products. The biggest abuse comes in the form of weight loss claims.

So I was reading this book where this guy was talking about all the benefits of coconut oil. I guess that he had done a goodly amount of research which led him to the conclusion that cold pressed coconut oil was a super food. I think the actual term he used was “Miracle Substance”.

He said that he started taking it an that after a few days his pants “fell off”. Pretty interesting concept considering the fact that coconut oil is 100% fat as with any oil. Further reading, however, showed that this interesting substance has major health benefits and that it doesn’t act like a traditional fat when ingested in the body.
