I guess that he had done a goodly amount of research which led him to the conclusion that cold pressed coconut oil was a super food. I think the actual term he used was “Miracle Substance”.

He said that he started taking it an that after a few days his pants “fell off”. Pretty interesting concept considering the fact that coconut oil is 100% fat as with any oil. Further reading, however, showed that this interesting substance has major health benefits and that it doesn’t act like a traditional fat when ingested in the body. That’s when I decided to give this a try.

It took a WEEK to find this stuff. Just so you know, coconut oil does NOT look like a traditional oil. It only begins to melt at 76 degrees, so it’s a solid most of the time. I ended up finding some at Whole Foods a week later and picked some up to see how this works in the real world.

Recommended serving is 1 tablespoon of coconut oil 1-4 times a day, but most of what I read said go with twice a day, so that’s what I’m doing.

The goal is to keep track of things for about the next two weeks and report results in the comments section of this thread.

Now everything in the body works together, so let me frame up for you the other aspects of how I’m living.

Food:
I’m currently in what I consider my “transitional” stage of diet. I’m struggling to integrate as many organic foods into our family diet as possible. All things considered, I’m realistically only at about 50/50 real food vs. non-food.

Nature's Way Organic Coconut Oil

I am eating a large breakfast and I take the coconut oil either right before breakfast or mixed in with my breakfast.

I’m drinking two cups of “Super Tea” each day. One cup of green tea in the morning before breakfast during my Bible Study time and once before dinner.

I’m eating a large breakfast. Lunch and dinner are more moderate. I’m eating as large of an organic salad as possible before both lunch and dinner. I do the whole “dip your fork in your dressing” thing for organic ranch dressing. With organic Italian or Vinegar and Oil I pour it on…but in strict moderation.

I’m eating at least one organic grapefruit each day. I’m eating at least one organic apple each day.

I’m drinking 1-4 bottles of water. Each bottle is 28 oz. I drink at least two of these before breakfast. Unfortunately, a reverse osmosis water filter is still in the future, so I’m ingesting unacceptable amounts of chlorine and fluoride except when I get the 5-gallon blue bottles and put them on the water cooler. I’m also flooding my skin and lungs with these two toxins while taking a shower, as I have yet to get a shower filter. This might slow down progress.

Fitness:
Exercise lever is VERY moderate right now. I am only really doing 30-40 minutes of yoga first thing in the morning to wake me up.

I’m going to be adding in a good amount of walking in about two weeks, and it’s around then that I’ll call it quits on this initial coconut oil test. Once I start walking 60 mins a day and sweating in the sauna for 15 mins a day, the results will probably be accelerated and won’t apply to this self-study very well.

Other Natural Supplements:
I’m not currently taking any other natural supplements except Vitamin D3 (1000 iu p/day) and Apple Cider Vinegar (1 tsp twice p/day). No weight loss pills, energy pills, energy drinks or anything like that.

My starting weight today is 246 lbs. My body fat according to my scale is 55%. Crazy.

Right now I’m struggling through a major phase of change in my life, the focus of which is the food that my family and I put into our bodies. As my eyes become more and more open the frightening realities that surround our nation’s standard food production and consumption model, I can see that I might very well eventually become considered a natural health “freak”.

In the past, I never really bothered to look at what was in the food that I was eating. I had “heard” that just about all of it was pretty bad for you and was full of “bad stuff” but what did that really mean? How true could such claims be? After all, I was pretty healthy, right?

The truth is, once you discover exactly what is going on in our nation where food is concerned, and start looking around to find out more you will eventually be led to start reading the labels of the food you buy. Only then will you come to grips with the true reality of all the trash the food companies are stuff into our food. Weird stuff. Bad stuff. Some really bad stuff. About as far from what would be considered natural health food as you could dream up.

The crazy part about this is that regardless of how much I know about the bad effects of this food, I am still eating it. At least half of what I eat now is still composed of what I’ll call “non-food”. Why? Two reasons:

Habit – our lives are composed of habits that are not easy to reshape. Much of it has to do with our daily routine and time management. I believe that only once my life is under strict control will I be able to achieve the goal of only eating good, 100% organic food in my home.

Money – all the natural health material I’m reading right now that praises the good effects of eating healthy, natural foods never brings to light the truth about the cost associated with the change. It’s not cheap. Of course, the alternative is far more expensive in so many ways. This is where a lot of prayer and faith are going to come in.

As I find myself eating unhealthy things (I made the family pancakes from a box topped with concentrated high fructose corn syrup) I wonder what is wrong with me. Then I find myself overwhelmed with a enduring sense of gratefulness. God has called me to not put poison into my body, not to encourage my wife to put poison into her body, and not to put poison in front of my kids for them to put into their bodies. The Lord never reveals a path which he wishes us to follow and then doesn’t provide the means.

Yesterday I went to take the trash out and found that the bag I had tossed out the previous evening had been ripped open a bit, and some of the contents were pulled out. I knew that it was the next door neighbors dog as I’ve caught him in the act multiple times.

The little bugger is old, but he’s rather fat as well. His owners would do well to not keep him outside as long (he cannot be contained by their fence) but they do feed him. So why does he eat the trash like a varmint raccoon?

I don’ think there is a good answer for this. Maybe he likes the taste of rotting food. Maybe he thinks he’s hungry. Maybe he IS hungry. Maybe he just has gotten into a habit and has no will or desire to stop.

Unfortunately, there are people all over America today that are doing the same thing. They’re dirty dogs, eating filth. Many do so because they like the taste of their rotten food. Many do so because they are hungry and it’s the cheapest, fastest solution to their need for food. Many do so because it’s a habit and they have no will or desire to stop.

That’s why I’m so grateful. The Lord has shown me that my lack of discipline in making nutrition a priority is destroying my own body as well as the bodies of those who are entrusted to my care! He’s helping me quickly move away from that pattern of living. He will ensure that I will be given the strength to overcome the habits or behaviors that have entrapped me into eating this stuff.

I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me which is why I know that I’ll be able to pursue this new path of natural health and good nutrition instead of being a slave to the American food production/consumption system.
